A Lovely Lesson

A little long but worth it.

One day a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down. It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed in the papers.

That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of > each student on a separate sheet of paper, and listed what everyone else had said about that individual. On Monday she gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling. "Really?" she heard whispered. "I never knew that meant anything to anyone!" "I didn't know others liked me so much." No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. She never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose. The students were happy with themselves and one another. That group of students moved on.

Several years later, one of the students was killed in Vietnam and> his teacher attended the funeral of that special student. She had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before. He looked so handsome, so mature. The church was packed with his friends. One by one those who loved him took a last walk by the coffin. The teacher was the last one to bless the coffin. As she stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to her. "Were you Mark's math teacher?" he asked. She nodded, yes. Then he said "Mark talked about you a lot."

After the funeral, most of Mark's former classmates went together to a luncheon. Mark's mother and father were there, obviously waiting to speak with histeacher."We want to show you something," his father said, taking a wallet out of his pocket. "They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it." Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times.

The teacher knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which she had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him. "Thank you so much for doing that," Mark's mother said. "As you can see, Mark treasured it." Mark's classmates started to gather around us. Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and said, "I still have my list It's in the top drawer of my desk at home."Chuck's wife said, "Chuck asked me to put his in> our wedding album. " I have mine too," Marilyn said. "It's in my diary." Then Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. I carry this with me at all times, " Vicki said without batting an eyelash.

" I think we all saved our lists." That's when the teacher finally sat down and cried. She cried for Mark and for all his friends who would never see him again. The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day. And we don't know when that one day will be. So please, tell the people you love and care for, that they are special and important. Tell them, before it is too late....

A Smile

This is a good story which I got somewhere from the web and is a true one, please read it all the way through until the
end! (After the story, there are some very interesting facts!):

I am a mother of three (ages 14, 12, 3) and have recently completed my college
degree. The last class I had to take was Sociology The teacher was absolutely
inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human being had been graced
with.

Her last project of the term was called, 'Smile.'

The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their
reactions.

I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway.
So, I thought this would be a piece of cake, literally.

Soon after we were assigned the project, my husband, youngest son,and I went
out to McDonald's one crisp March morning. It was just our way of sharing
special playtime with our son.

We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone
around us began to back away, and then even my husband did.

I did not move an inch... an overwhelming feeling of panic welled up inside of
me as I turned to see why they had moved.

As I turned around I smelled a horrible 'dirty body' smell, and there standing
behind me were two poor homeless men.

As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was 'smiling'.

His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of God's Light as he searched for
acceptance. He said, 'Good day' as he counted the few coins he had been
clutching.

The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend. I
realized the second man was mentally challenged and the blue-eyed gentleman
was his salvation.

I held my tears as I stood there with them. The young lady at the counter asked
him what they wanted.

He said, 'Coffee is all Miss' because that was all they could afford.(If they
wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they had to buy something. He
just wanted to be warm).

Then I really felt it - the compulsion was so great I almost reached out and
embraced the little man with the blue eyes.

That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me,judging my
every action.

I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give me two more
breakfast meals on a separate tray.

I then walked around the corner to the table that the men had chosen as a
resting spot. I put the tray on the table and laid my hand on the blue-eyed
gentleman's cold hand.

He looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, 'Thank you.' I leaned
over, began to pat his hand and said, 'I did not do this for you. God is here
working through me to give you hope.'

I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband and son. When I sat down
my husband smiled at me and said, 'That is why God gave you to me, Honey, to
give me hope.'

We held hands for a moment and at that time, we knew that only because of the
Grace that we had been given were we able to give.

We are not church goers, but we are believers.

That day showed me the pure Light of God's sweet love.I returned to college,
on the last evening of class, with this story in hand..

I turned in 'my project' and the instructor read it.

Then she looked up at me and said, 'Can I share this?'

I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class.

She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human beings and being
part of God share this need to heal people and to be healed.

In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald's, my son, instructor, and
every soul that shared the classroom on the last night I spent as a college
student.

I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn: UNCONDITIONAL
ACCEPTANCE.

Much love and compassion is sent to each and every person who may read this
and learn how to LOVE PEOPLE AND USE THINGS - NOT LOVE THINGS AND USE PEOPLE.
Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will
leave footprints in your heart. To handle yourself, use your head. To handle
others, use your heart. God Gives every bird it's food, but He does not throw
it into its nest.

Nail in the Fence

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper,he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there." A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. Friends are very rare jewels, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share words of praise and they always want to open their hearts to us." **********Please forgive me if I have ever left a hole in your heart :)

Footprints

One day a man having conversation with god when his whole life flashed before his eyes as a series of footsteps on the sands of time.
He saw that there were two pairs of footprints, but during the most difficult periods of his life there were only one set of footprints.

He asked god "You said you will be with me throughout this journey, but why have you deserted me during the most critical times of my life??"

To which god answered "Son, I did not desert you, I was always with you...you see only one set of footprints because during those difficult times in your life, I was carrying you
