I am interested in the search of knowledge and facts, interesting discourse and debate, and also journeys exploring people, relationships and circumstances, even if they are just imagined plots of some creative minds. I love to rummage through records of such wisdom, adventures and experiences. Don’t you admire such intellectual pursuits?Maybe you do. However, if that simply means I like to read books on various subjects, would your perception change? “Oh, so you are a bookworm.” Thoughts of stereotyped weird nerdy types may emerge. It is unbelievable how peaceful book lovers have been given such a bad but incorrect image but many of us do not care. When I step into a really good bookshop, I felt awed by its enormous store of wisdom, knowledge, and legacies from thousands of years of Man’s history. Here lies innumerable revelations and thoughts from the best brains, colossal figures or just another friendly chap next door, to expound their theories, impart their knowledge, enrich our lives or just brighten up our day. There is an old Chinese saying that in books you will find maidens with complexions like jade and houses made of gold. It means that the knowledge and wisdom captured in books can make you wealthy and gain you the approving hands of the most beautiful ladies around. How profound and inspiring (and a little sexist too).Beyond the bread, butter and gold, books can be your faithful companions for life. Cultivate this as a regular habit for it can usefully see you through many empty hours and days. Read regularly and wide. It will serve you well. Do not let the high price of books, absence of public libraries or other constraints discourages you, even though much could be done by our government about this. With another weekend approaching, isn’t it time to look for a good read and happily ease yourself into it !
